Plaque at base of sculpture

As the plaque reveals, Brian Bevan (1924-1991) was a much loved star of the Warrington Rugby League Football Club between 1945 and 1962.

The sculpture was commissioned by Warrington Borough Council two years after Bevan's death. It was funded by Warrington Borough Council lottery and Birse Group PLC. It stood at Brian Bevan Island on Wilderspool Causeway near the club's old Wilderspool Stadium on Fletcher Street. The statue was moved in 2004 when a new stadium was completed at north east of the town centre. It is now sited outside the Brian Bevan Gates into the Halliwell Jones Stadium off the A49.
