Built for Napoleon I to celebrate his military successes. On top of the Arc are the bronze horses which were taken by Napoleon from Saint-Marc of Venice; after his final defeat in 1815 these were returned to Venice and in 1828 replicas were made to replace them.

The names of the battles and treaties of Napoleon are inscribed on the Arc.
