Description: A clock design in the paving outside the Town Hall on High Street. The design extends to c. 18m in diameter and has a series of concentric circles. In the outer ring are two sets of decorative elements: a small white square and a stylised rose. A large paved ring within this contains 12 brass circles marking out the hours; these are contain different motifs, images, texts and ideas. An inner ring is decorated with alternating triangular motifs and squares similar to those in the outer circle. The central brass circle contains an inscription.

Inscription: In the central circle: AN HOUR IN THE SQUARE
Examples from the hour markers: NATURE IS A STRUCTURE. THE BIRDS AROUND HERE. ON EXACTLY THE RIGHT LINES. ELEVEN INCHES OUT OF VERTICAL. I STILL GET UP AT PIT TIME. DOWN AT THE MARKET.

Commission: Barnsley MBC. Funding from various local government schemes including the Capital Modernisation Fund, Local Transport Plan and Single Regeneration Budget. This was part of refurbishment of Hoyland Town Square whose total budget was £340,000. The brief for the square was to provide a "small-scale performance space for activities and events with a centrepiece of floor artwork." [1] Barnsley Council's Highways and Engineering Design Consultancy provided the overall design for the square. Construction work began on 19 January 2004, after consultations in 2003 with local residents by the Hoyland Area Forum and Hoyland Town Centre Working Group. The text on the hour markers is taken from the interviews with local residents.

Comment: Based on the Old Town Hall Clock which had been removed and was much missed. [2]
