‘Marathon gates’
1990
steel, stainless

Location:
Don Valley Stadium, Competitors Entrance. This is next to the enquiries and administrative offices entrance, off Worksop Road at ground level. (A-Z p88 5C)

Description:
Vivid scenes of sporting activity are portrayed against sports-related lines such as nets, tracks, and swimming lanes. Heads indicate a watching crowd. Figures are close to life-size.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council. The only completed commission in a programme of work intiated for the World Student Games of 1992.

Comment:
Artist worked with the children at Whiteways Middle School to produce images relating to sport. Enthusiasm was easily generated as it was the time of the 1991 Commonwealth Games which the children were watching on TV. Collage work and casts of the children's work led to the final images, which were then selected, composed and finally rendered in steel.

Artist Statement:
"I worked pretty much with what the children gave me."
