PUBLIC ART IN SHEFFIELD

Michael Johnson
'Hop and Sheaf of Barley', 2003
Summerfield Street
stainless steel

Location:
Summerfield Street, on brick gateposts at the entrance to the Porterbrook Walk, in front of a residential apartment building [formerly on site of Wards Brewery] (A-Z p.98 4C)

Description:
Two, 1 metre high, stainless steel sculptures set on gateposts, one of a hop the other a sheaf of barley. These are constructed of numerous tran-sections fixed to a central pole. The inner surfaces of the sections of the barley sheaf are decorated with designs based on ears of barley which add interesting detail to the piece.

Commission:
J.F.Finnegan Ltd. who redeveloped the site.

Comment:
A second piece, 'Hop Sculpture', also designed by Johnson, is sited at the rear entrance to the site on Summerfield Street. Although this was conceived as part of the same project as 'Hop and Sheaf of Barley' it is quite different and more naturalistic in style
