Richard Perry
'Thomas Boulsover', 1991
Tudor Square
bronze

Location:
On a plinth set close to the oval at the Surrey Street end of Tudor Square. (A-Z p5 4F)

Description:
The profile portrait is taken from the only known likeness of Boulsover. The portrait commemorates Boulsover and the nearby site of his workshop, where he invented the Sheffield Plate Process.

Inscription:
Bronze plaque attached to plinth: THOMAS / BOULSOVER / 1705-1788 / Inventor of / Old
Sheffield Plate / Thomas Boulsover made the / chance discovery of / the fusion of copper and / silver on this
site in 1743. / This invention created a thriving industry and / helped Sheffield prosper.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council, funded by J.G. Graves Charitable Trust.

Comment:
The likeness is both convex and concave, which neatly refers to the plating process. Some artistic licence was taken with the portrait as the only extant image is not very clear.
