William Pye
'Double Somersault' 1976
The Children's Hospital
stainless steel

Location:
In front of the Children's Hospital, Western Bank. It was moved from its original position at the main entrance of the Children's Hospital to a site further along the front facade of the building when the entrance was altered.

[Update: 2000]
A second removal has taken place. Double Somersault is now sited in the adjacent Clarkson Street where it stands in a car park by the side of the road. New images to appear shortly. (A-Z p98 2B)

Description:
Aptly named, the tubing twists over and over at the end of a vertical thrust.

Commission:
Sheffield Children's Hospital in its centenary year. Details appear on a plaque onsite:

Comment:
A similar piece by Pye was sited for some years close to the Mappin Art Gallery in neighbouring Weston Park.
