PUBLIC ART IN SHEFFIELD

Darren Richardson
bench, 1994
Paternoster Row
cast iron and wood

Location:
Set into paving in front of the Workstation and the Sheffield Media Exhibition Centre, Paternoster Row. (A-Z p5 5F)

Description:
The wooden seat has three different cast iron legs. One is in the form of an open triangle, one a circle and the third a square. A lighter version of these shapes provides the back support.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council

Comment:
The artists on this project worked independently but discovered in the final stages of their designs that they had considered using the same geometric shapes. In the bench, they are used to refer to images which are universal rather than particular to Sheffield.
