Millennium Canteen
Frances
Julie Whitelaw - Fish Slice
A thick gauge of silver
was used for the blade which was cut to shape and reinforced with central
'rat tail' on the upper side before decorative gold wires were soldered
onto the surface. The handle was constructed with an inner armature of
2 pressed halves of silver sheet soldered together to create a hollow
shell. Hammered strips of silver were then shaped and edged with gold
before being individually soldered onto the shell structure.
The handle was riveted to the base before finally being soldered.
The finished surface of the blade is covered with a pattern of shimmering
hammer work and the inside of the hollow handle is decorated with crinkled
gold leaf.
Total length 28 cm, the blade which was made separately from the handle
is 25 cm long and 10 cm wide.
