In 1994 David Mach was commissioned to design a major landmark sculpture for Darlington. 'Train' is a development from an earlier piece by Mach called 'Running out of steam' which was made from magazines.

'Train' is sited alongside the A66, on land which used to be part of the original Darlington-Stockton railway. It is made of 'Accrington Nori', a brick specially fired again for this project and which used to be common in the railway industry in this area.

It was claimed to be the largest single piece sculpture in the country at the time it was built.

Darlington Borough Council and Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc with support from Northern Arts raised £190,000 towards this project and were then able to secure a National Lottery award of a further £570,000. The total budget was £760,000.
