Description:
Four large blocks of uncut limestone are grouped together in a square. On one stands a bronze woman, hands on hips, with a shawl over her head. Between the limestone blocks is a mound of coal and broken timbers, from which the head and shoulders of a trapped miner can be seen.

Commission:
Commissioned by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, with the assistance of Public Arts and the Yorkshire Arts Association.

Comment:
A plaque on one of the limestone blocks states:

"A TRIBUTE TO THE MEN AND BOYS
WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AT
THE DENABY AND CADEBY MAIN COLLIERIES FROM 1869
AND TO THE WOMEN WHO SHARED THEIR LIVES ..."
