Warrington has connections with Lewis Carroll who was born nearby at Newton-by-Daresbury, Cheshire in 1832. The north-east corner of Cheshire has a history of hat-making, so this is an obvious subject to depict from the works of Carroll.
It is located in a contemporary shopping precinct in the heart of Warrington and was unveiled by HRH the Prince and Princess of Wales on May 30th, 1984. It was commissioned by the Legal And General Assurance Society.

It was curious to watch people using the benches to sit on; as the sculptor presumably intended. I was in the area for over half an hour and while I saw several groups of people sitting down, none of them faced inwards to engage with the carved characters, but all faced away.
