Description: A monk holding a child aloft in his arms. The robe and body of the monk are shown in bold sweeping lines and planes; the monk's head and the child are depicted more naturalistically. The child is in a crucified position with a nail through its feet. The statue stands near the entrance to the school and is clearly visible from the road. Inscription: On rear of statue at base in St Bernard's cloak: J.B 1968 Dimensions: statue: 250cm high x 100cm wide x 85 cm deep pedestal: 80cm high x 107cm wide x 92 cm deep Commission: No details. John Bunting (1927-2002) was for 40 years drawing master or art master at Ampleforth School in North Yorkshire, where much of his work can be seen. It is not known how he was selected to make this piece in Rotherham.
