PUBLIC ART IN SHEFFIELD

Chris Boulton (restored and cast by)
griffins, 1995
Castle Square
bronze

Location:
Castle Square. (A-Z p5 3F)

Description:
Four winged lions set on brick pillars either side of the access between Arundel Gate and High Street.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council with European Regional Development Funding. This work was part of the creation of Castle Square on the traffic intersection formerly known as 'The Hole in the Road', a famous 1960's Sheffield landmark.

Comment:
The griffins were cast from moulds taken of the stone griffins that once stood around the wall at the base of the Crimea Monument. The moulds were taken from the two best surviving griffins and some work was needed to restore the fine details around their heads.
