Mike Disley
sculpture relief, 1989
Leadmill
stone

Location:
Over The Leadmill's main entrance on Leadmill Road. (A-Z p5 6F)

Description:
This is a deeply carved relief comprised of 10 slabs of stone, arranged five across and two high and set above the main entrance of this popular venue for live music. Depicted on the frieze are two lively musicians playing their instruments, double base and a horn, in a highly animated fashion. Musical notation is seen to fill the air. Below the frieze are two further elements; two planters, also carved in stone, containing colourful flowers made of painted metal.

Commission:
The Leadmill.

Comment:
The work captures the energetic spirit of a venue devoted to many kinds of cultural activities. The piece is cut from eight different pieces of stone, it was quite difficult installing the piece because of this. It was hard to align the different pieces of stone precisely.
