Tony Donnelly
‘Leaping into View’, 1998
The Exchange, Commercial Street, S1
paint on boards

(removed when the building was re-developed in 1999)

The Exchange, Commercial Street, S1 (A-Z p5 1H)

Black and white painted boards infilling the windows at ground level of this fine building. Each painting depicts the face of a child with the professions that they would choose for themselves, written in a facsimile of their own handwriting underneath it. The children came from various schools in the city. The project formed part of Donnelly’s final year Degree Show work while a Fine Art student at Sheffield Hallam University.

Self-generated. The artist negotiated with English Partnership, owners of the building.

The building is scheduled for renovation. This piece will remain here until building work commences.

Update October 1999:
this has now started and the panels have been removed.
