Metal Heaven Project

Jennie Gill
Screen, 1998
Fargate - removed during refurbishment of the street; not replaced
stainless steel

Location:
At the bottom of Fargate. (A-Z p5 3E)
[Update 2005] The screen has been removed and it is unclear whether it will ever be restored to this site.

Description:
Based on organic forms the screen looks a little bit like a strung out necklace. It stands about 2m high and is sited in two quarter-circular curves, which meet to form a narrow throughway.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council as part of the Metal Heaven Project. Funding for this project came from a variety of sources: the Crafts Council; the European Community; Sheffield Hallam University; Yorkshire and Humberside Arts; Arts and Museums, Leisures Services, Sheffield; Sheffield City Council and the Foundation for sport and the arts.

Comment:
Sometimes used as a bicycle rack by a lone cyclist
