Michael Johnson
'Hop Sculpture', 2003
Ecclesall Road
stainless steel

Location:
Ecclesall Road, outside 'The Granary', formerly the site of Wards Brewery and now a residential apartment building. (A-Z p.98 4C)

Description:
A 2 metre high naturalistic sculpture of a hop set on brick pedestal... The individual parts of the hop are attached to a central pole concealed within the structure, which also forms the stalk at the top of the sculpture

Commission:
J.F.Finnegan Ltd. who redeveloped the site.

Comment:
A second piece, 'Hop and Sheaf of Barley', also designed by Johnson, is sited at the rear entrance to the site on Summerfield Street. Although this was conceived as part of the same project as 'Hop Sculpture' they are quite different and less naturalistic in style
