PUBLIC ART IN SHEFFIELD

Craig Longmuir
pedestrian bridge decoration, 1980-1990
Earl Street crossing Eyre Street
paint

The bridge was demolished in 2005 as part of the redevelopment of this street

Location:
Earl Street crossing Eyre Street. (A-Z p4 6D)

Description:
Wedge shape motif at bridge ends was used as a repeated pattern. The colours were suggested by the surroundings.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council. Work was to be done by the Council, Longmuir had to provide a colour scheme for the bridge that could be repeated as repainting became necessary. All colours used are therefore commercially available. The bridge has been regularly repainted.

Comment:
Artist feels he had two options; conceal the bridge or make it dominating. He would now make the colours more subtle.
