PUBLIC ART IN SHEFFIELD

David Mayne
bollards (8), 1993
Paternoster Row
cast iron and brass

Location:
Set into paving in front of the Workstation and the Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre, Paternoster Row. A bench made by Darren Richardson was also installed here at the same time. (A-Z p5 5F

Description:
Bollards are textured with imprints of found industrial objects (notice the 'Made in Sheffield') and capped by basic geometric shapes, the circle, square, triangle. These shapes recur in Darren Richardson’s bench.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council. Made by Streetscene, Sheffield based street furniture manufacturers. The bollards now appear in their catalogue.

Comment:
Artist says the reference to Sheffield industry was meant to be communicated by using found objects in the casting process and retaining the surface texture and dull finish of the casting as much as possible. Unfortunately this seems not to have been possible; many of the details are difficult to see.
