Location:
Interior, Main Entrance, Sheffield Town Hall, S1. (A-Z p5 4E)

Description:
Three reliefs on each side of the entrance. One is signed "F.W.Pomeroy Sc.". Another has the head of the Mayor Alderman William Johnson Clegg (who laid the foundation stone in 1891)and the date 1888 beneath it. The reliefs depict various virtues and are surmounted by improving texts and scrolls depicting further virtuous attributes.

Inscriptions:
The following six texts are illustrated by carved panels: "WORK WHILE IT IS DAY FOR THE NIGHT COMETH"; "BE JUST AND FEAR NOT"; "STRENGTH AND TEMPERANCE SHALL ENFORCE THE LAW"; "LET ALL THINGS BE DONE WITH CHARITY"; "BETTER IT IS TO GET WISDOM THAN GOLD"; "GOD SHALL RULE AND GUIDE OUR COUNCILS".
Additional scrolls include these attributes: "PURITY", "AFFECTION", "FAITH" and "TRUTH".

Commission:
Sheffield Town Council. F.W. Pomeroy was awarded the commission to carry out and supervise the carving for the building

The Town Hall was built between 1891 and 1897.
