PUBLIC ART IN SHEFFIELD

Pope, Ronald
Mother and Two Children, 1953
Brookhouse Junior School, Beighton
Hadene stone

Location:
On the exterior of a building at Brookhouse Junior School, School Road, Beighton. No public access, though the piece is visible from the road. (A-Z p.115 4H)

Description:
Figure of a woman supporting a boy and a girl standing on a ladder? or possibly a series of plates? The piece is 1.68 m high

Commission:
"Derbyshire County Architect's Department for Beighton County Junior School". [1]
The carving is made in Hadene stone from quarries in Cromford, Derbyshire. At that time Beighton was in Derbyshire and press reports emphasize the fact that a Derbyshire School received a sculpture made from Derbyshire stone.

Comment:
Pope worked as a draughtsman for Rolls Royce during the war and then studied sculpture and painting at the Slade School from 1945-1948. He was resident in Ticknall, Derbyshire at the time that this piece was made.

Our thanks to Ronald Pope's daughter who contacted us with this information about her father's work.
