'Reach for the Stars', 1998

Sunnyvale Road, Totley Primary School.
On an exterior wall to the right of the main entrance. (A-Z p.120 5D)
Description:
The artist designed, carved and
built the sculpture, based on a theme of 'science', at the school site.
The resulting relief depicts a kneeling girl with arm outstretched, pointing
towards shooting stars and a passing rocket.
Commission:
Totley Primary School. Supported
by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England. Materials donated
by Ibstock Brick Nostell Ltd and Naylor Clayware Ltd.
Comment:
The artist also worked with the
children at the school to produce planters and a ceramic figure, which is
attached to the wall at the main entrance. Jason
Thomson also worked on this project and made a carved wooden sculpture
as well as two other pieces working with children at the school. These are
sited on grass in front of the entrance. Above the main entrance arethree carved reliefs in stone which were
made at the time the school was built in 1951.
