Neil
Woodall
'The Sheffield Mural', 1990
retaining wall at carpark, Granada Motel, Prince of Wales Road
inked and sandblasted stainless steel
Location:
Carpark, Granada Motel, Prince of
Wales Road. (A-Z p101 3E)
Description:
Panoramic view of Sheffield taken
from Park Hill which includes Sheffield United Stadium and Sheffield Hallam
University's Pond Street site before renovation. There is no link between
the subject and the site of the work. A reference to this piece can be seen
in another work (1994) by Neil Woodall at Grinder's
Hill, between the Untitled Gallery and The Workstation, where one panel
of the Grinder's Hill piece quotes directly from the Sheffield Mural.
Commission:
Granada plc. Initially the garage
on the site were interested in the commission on a joint basis, but pulled
out.
Comment:
Artist speaks of an imaginatively
constructed panorama; the perspective adjustments taken from major buildings
and prominent features. Compositional liberties were taken to create a pleasing
curving skyline. Further imaginative play can be seen in rendering of certain
details: eg. some of the windows contain messages to Woodall's friends and
a flowerhead is represented by a heart shape.
