Benjamin Zephaniah
3 poems: ‘minds’ ‘question’ ‘heroes’, 1998
New Student Residences behind the Old Fire Station (now Bar Coast), Division Street, S1.
metal plate

Location:
New Student Residences behind the Old Fire Station (now Bar Coast), Division Street, S1. (A-Z p.4 4D)

Description:
Window grilles on each window of the building. Stencilled words have cut out of metal plate in a utilitarian fashion. The words form three poems, one can be read across the Rockingham Street Facade, one from Rockingham Lane, and one viewed around the internal courtyard.

Commission:
Commisioned for Phoenix Court by 'Off The Shelf'. Sponsored by Northern Counties Housing with help from HLM Architects. The building has been leased to Sheffield Hallam University as student housing.

Comment:
Zephaniah was seen as an eminently suitable choice for a building which was to be used as a student residence. He was also visiting Sheffield as part of a Festival promoting literature called 'Off the Shelf' which ran throughout October 1998.

Copyright:
We are very grateful to Benjamin Zephaniah for permission to print the texts of the three poems.
