Inscription: "THE FEED. from the Painting by / J.F.HERRING SENr ESQ. F.R.A."

Commission: The house was erected by the Swift family who were stone masons based in Cawthorne. In the retaining wall opposite the house are some of the practice works carried out by Samuel Swift as an apprentice. They are relief carvings depicting paintings by J.F.Herring. Herring himself had a strong local connection and was discovered by Rev Stanhope whilst driving the mail coach from Doncaster.

Comment: Samuel Swift was in charge of the workshop of Farmer and Brindley of London while G.F.Bodley refurbished All Saints' in 1875-1880. His work can be seen there and also on the front facade of the Methodist Church in Cawthorne.
