| Description: A hexagonal plinth, also used as a seat, in the centre of which is a sculpture. This takes the form of a seated boy with a dog sitting in its lap and a football. The dog is as large as the child and has its head on the boy's right shoulder. The carving is massive and basic, the child's hands oversized and the figures intertwined. Dimensions: sculpture sandstone 92cm high x 80cm x 75cm seat sandstone flags set on top of a recycled brick & stone base 47 cm high x 190cm across Commission: Commissioned to commemorate the life of Don Lunn, a former mining surveyor, who ran the local post-office and shop. Lunn, who died suddenly, had also been an FA referee and was much loved by families in the village. The stone for the seating was recycled from Silkstone Common Station and assembled by local resident, Steve Berry. Comment: Installation of the piece was interrupted for four years by the objections of a local councillor. Since Lunn had played football games with his family in this glade, the organisers refused to consider another site. The sculpture was exhibited at Gateshead Garden Festival during this impasse and subsequently quietly sited once the objector was no longer on the council.
